ROME, Ga. - Union College finally got its 2010 softball season underway this afternoon with an 8-0 thrashing of St. Mary-of-the-woods College in the first round of the Shorter College Classic.
Union now sits at 1-0 (0-0 AAC) in the opening weekend of the season.
The Lady Bulldogs handed the ball to sophomore Abby Sears (London, Ky.) (1-0) in the opener and she didn't disappoint, hurling a five inning complete game shutout for the win. The contest was stopped in the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Sears recorded six strikeouts while only allowing two hits in the outing.
Leading the way for Union offensively was sophomore Morgan Brown (Waynesburg, Ky.) who knocked in four RBI's while going 2-for-3 from the plate with a double. Freshman Autumn Greenwell (Hopkinsville, Ky.) made her first collegiate game a memorable one as she went 1-for-2 from the dish with a three-run homer.
Also providing solid contributions offensively in the opener was senior catcher Bethany Outland (Hopkinsville, Ky.) as she went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and junior Ashley Tatman (Lexington, Ky.) who crossed the plate three times for the Lady Bulldogs.
The Lady Bulldogs return to action this evening as they will do battle against the University of Mobile.
