BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union hurlers Brandon Hedrick and Adam Snyder played a game of one-upsmanship Friday as the No. 16 Bulldogs swept the Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader from visiting UVa-Wise, winning 18-0 and 6-2.

Hedrick (Corbin, Ky.) pitched a complete-game shutout, going five innings and allowing no runs on three hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in the 18-0 opener.

All Snyder (Knoxville, Tenn.) did was fan a school-record 14 batters in tossing a complete-game in the 6-2 decision. The 6-foot-4 right-hander gave up two unearned runs on five hits and two walks.

Ironically, Hedrick tied the single-game strikeout record earlier in the season when he punched out 12 in a win over Ohio Dominican on Feb. 20.

The wins improve Union to 16-6 overall and 7-1 in conference play, while UVa-Wise drops to 6-10 overall and 1-6 in the AAC.

In the first game, Union lined only 13 hits but took advantage of 10 bases on balls and one hit by pitch in rolling to the 18-0 victory.

Union took a 1-0 lead after the first before exploding for nine runs in the second for a 10-0 advantage. The Bulldogs sent 14 batters to the plate and had seven hits in the frame. Donnie Popham (Louisville, Ky.) had the biggest hit of the inning with a two-run double.

Steve Scheelk (Kansas City, Mo.) added a two-run single in the third to make it 12-0 before Union wrapped up the scoring with a six-run fourth.

Scheelk led the team offensively in going 3-for-3 with four RBIs, while Josh Longbrake (St. Cloud, Fla.) drove in two runs. Popham finished 1-for-1 but had three RBIs, and Tyler Brake (Burlington, Ky.) was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

In the finale, Union used a three-run rally in the fourth to reclaim the lead en route to the 6-2 decision.

Down 1-0 in the top of the fourth, UVa-Wise took advantage of an error to push two runs across. Dusty Haigler started the inning by reaching on an error, and Brad Robbins followed with a single to right. A sac bunt put a Cavalier on second and third with one out, and Snyder appeared to be on his way out of the jam when he fanned Brian King for the second out in the inning. However, Kirby Bush blooped a two-run single into no-man's land in shallow center field to put UVa-Wise up 2-1.

The Bulldogs wasted no time in fighting back as they put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth, claiming a 4-2 lead. Troy Sitton (Cobden, Ill.) tied the game with a run-scoring double, and a Scheelk sac fly put Union ahead 3-2. Jonathan Riddle (Eighty Eight, Ky.) followed with a RBI single up the middle for a 4-2 Union advantage.

Union tacked on two more runs in the fifth as UVa-Wise pitchers walked the first four batters of the inning.

Sitton finished with two RBIs in going 1-for-3 with a run scored, while Brake went 2-for-2 with a RBI.

Union returns to action Sunday when it hosts Cumberlands (Ky.) at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs and Cavaliers will complete their three-game, AAC series Monday with a nine-inning game at 3 p.m.
