BLUEFIELD, Va. - No. 16 Union extends its win streak to 15 games as the Bulldogs defeated host Bluefield (Va.) 3-2 and 6-4 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play Saturday.
The wins improve Union to 21-6 overall and 10-1 in the conference, while Bluefield is 15-7 overall and 7-3 in the AAC.
Pitching was once again the strength for the Bulldogs with Brandon Hedrick (Corbin, Ky.) and Adam Snyder (Knoxville, Tenn.) both tossing complete-game victories. Hedrick went the distance in the 3-2 victory to up his record to 5-0, and Snyder won the 6-4 contest to go to 4-1.
Union never trailed in either contest. In the opener, the Bulldogs scored once in the first and two in the third for a 3-0 advantage. Bluefield rallied for two runs in the fifth but could not get any closer.
In the second game, Union built a 5-0 cushion with two runs in the first and three more in the second. The Rams again fought back with three in the third and another in the sixth to pull within 5-4. However, the Bulldogs sealed the win with a run in the seventh for the 6-4 victory.
The third game of the series was to be played Sunday but has been postponed with the forecast of rain. No makeup date has been set as of yet.
Union returns to action Wednesday and Thursday with a three-game set against Taylor (Ind.). Wednesday's doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m. with Thursday's single game to start at 1 p.m.
