KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Second-seeded Union kept its season alive by outlasting No. 6 seed UVa-Wise 18-14 in the losers' bracket of the 2010 Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament Monday.
With the win, the Bulldogs (37-15 overall) move on to face the loser of the Bryan (Tenn.)/Bluefield (Va.) game Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
UVa-Wise ends the season at 27-21.
Troy Sitton (Cobden, Ill.) tied a school record for most hits in a game as he went 5-for-6 with three runs scored and a RBI. Ben Hartley (Lexington, Ky.), who made only his fourth start of the season, was 2-for-5 with a team-high three RBIs. Demetrius Davis (Marietta, Ga.) finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two driven in.
Union looked as if it was going to cruise to a fairly easy win when the Bulldogs put up nine runs in the second for a 9-0 lead. Union had only five hits in the inning, but the UVa-Wise pitchers walked five batters. Davis, Ryan Satterlee (Youngstown, Ohio) and Josh Longbrake (St. Cloud, Fla.) each had two-run base hits during the rally.
In the fourth, UVa-Wise began to battle back as it took advantage of two Union errors during a six-run rally. Brad Robbins had the big hit of the frame with a two-run double down the right-field line, cutting the margin to 9-6.
Brandon Hedrick (Corbin, Ky.) and Sitton each drove in a run in the sixth, upping Union's lead to 11-6. However, UVa-Wise pushed across five runs in the bottom of the frame to even the score at 11-11. Robbins had another two-run double for the Cavaliers, and a passed ball helped score another run.
Union took a 12-11 lead in the seventh when Steve Scheelk (Kansas City, Mo.) scored on a wild pitch. But UVa-Wise took a 14-12 lead thanks to a Luis Roa two-run double and an error that allowed Roa to score.
In the eighth, the Bulldogs broke loose for five runs in grabbing a 17-14 advantage. Tyler Martin (Corbin, Ky.) and Hartley each knocked in a run to tie the game at 14-14. Hartley later scored on a wild pitch, and Brian Mouton (Oakland, Calif.) added a two-run single to give Union a three-run cushion.
Union tacked on an insurance run in the ninth as Hartley drove in his third run of the game, making the final 18-14.
Adam Snyder (Knoxville, Tenn.) made his first relief appearance of the season and picked up the win, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits and no walks with on strikeout in 3 2/3 innings pitched.
For UVa-Wise, Robbins finished the day 5-for-6 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Tommy Meier, Roa and Brian King each had two RBIs.
Josh Guizar suffered the loss, giving up four earned runs on three hits and one walk with no strikeouts in only an inning of work.
In all, the teams combined to use 13 pitchers with UVa-Wise sending eight out to the bump and Union five.
