DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Union saw its season come to an end Wednesday with an 18-1 loss to St. Thomas (Fla.), eliminating the Bulldogs from the 2010 NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round.
The five-team opening round is hosted by Embry-Riddle (Fla.) in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Union finishes the season with a 39-18 overall record.
St. Thomas is 32-30 overall and will take on Rio Grande (Ohio) Thursday at 2 p.m. The winner will play Embry-Riddle at 6 p.m. for the right to advance to the Avista-NAIA World Series.
The Bobcats wasted little time in seizing control of the game as they opened up the top of the first with an eight-run outburst. St. Thomas lined six hits and took advantage of three Union errors in building the 8-0 advantage. Ruy Rodriguez and Robert Rodriguez each had two-run doubles during the rally.
St. Thomas scored a run in each the second and third innings to build a 10-0 advantage.
Union scored its lone run in the bottom of the third when Brian Mouton (Oakland, Calif.) singled in Ben Hartley (Lexington, Ky.).
The Bobcats tacked on five runs in the seventh and another in the ninth to seal the 17-run decision.
Union was limited to seven hits with no one having more than one.
Robert Rodriguez finished the game 3-for-6 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Four other Bobcats had two RBIs apiece.
