COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Union College cycling team fell short of a fourth-straight Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference Championship with a second place finish this past weekend at Lindsey Wilson College. However, Union qualified for their seventh straight National Collegiate Cycling Association National Championship.

Michigan Tech University won the championship, followed by Union in second with Northern Michigan University, Murray State (Ky.) University and Butler (Ind.) University from third to fifth, respectively.

On Saturday, a pair of Bulldogs suffered mechanical failure in the Expert Short-Track event to sideline them from the event. Zach Winn (Ontario, Canada) was leading the race before a chain broke and Greg Gibson (Salt Lake City, Utah) fell out of the race when his frame broke while in third. Union’s highest finish came from Jonathan Turner (Harlan, Ky.) in tenth while Zac Moore (Loveland, Ohio) came across in the Top 20.

The attention turned to the cross-country races on Sunday. Winn and Gibson suffered more mechanical failures in the Expert Cross-Country race. Winn was in second place when a flat tire dropped him to tenth and Gibson fell from the Top 5 to 12th with his setback.

A trio of Bulldogs, Sean Trinque (Burriville, R.I.), Colin McEacharan (Ontario, Canada) and Andrew Reed (Robinson, Texas), raced to Top-20 finishes in the B Cross-Country event.

Three Lady Bulldogs raced in their first Expert Cross-Country event at the conference championship. Karen Caldwell (Bristol, Tenn.) and Amy Russell (Monticello, Ky.) finished sixth and eighth, respectively while Jamie Bonza (Corbin, Ky.) crashed on the second lap and did not finish.

The NCCA National Championship will be in Banner Elk, N.C. from October 26 to 28.
