BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College Women's Soccer program announced today the signing of five newcomers to its program for the 2010 soccer season.
Head coach Jason Lanham commented on the class, "I feel this group adds great depth to our roster and will help us in our quest to defend our AAC crown from the previous season."
In breaking down the class, three of the signees are transfers, while two are local Kentucky high school standouts.
Sophomore goal keeper, Stephanie Burton (Queensland, Australia) joins the Lady Bulldogs after transferring from Lindsey Wilson College. She will add depth at the keeper position, as well as experience. "Stephanie is a very skilled keeper that brings a wealth of experience from playing in the lower levels of her national team," commented Lanham. "She most recently spent time on the U19 squad in Australia and we are glad to have her join our program."
A Heartland Community College transfer from Kansas, Nichole Grindler (Manteno, Ill.) also joins the Lady Bulldogs, adding depth to the goal keeper position as a sophomore transfer. "Nicole is an athletic keeper that showed very well in her visit to Union," commented Lanham. "Nichole played in seven matches for Heartland last season with 12 saves while only surrendering four goals, so with all that said, we are glad she is with us at Union."
Another transfer, from Western Kentucky University, Heather Price (Bowling Green, Ky.) will be bringing her talents to Union as a defenseman. Only a freshman, coach Lanham is excited to have a talent like Heather at his disposal, stating, "Heather is a very talented D-I transfer defender from Western Kentucky she will be a great fit in our program here and I look for her to accomplish great things during her time here." Heather notched six goals and five assists her senior year, leading Greenwood High School to a Final Four berth in the KHSAA state tournament. In her four years at Greenwood, the Gators tallied a 65-21-7 record while winning three district championships, two regional championships and making two appearances in the state Final Four overall.
Also joining the Lady Bulldog squad is freshman Niedra Lundy (London, Ky.). A standout goal keeper at North Laurel High School, Lundy won 31 matches, collecting 16 shutouts in those games in just three seasons. She will be redshirted in her inaugural season.
Rounding out the recruiting class is freshman midfielder, Morgan Stuck (Sheperdsville, Ky.) from North Bullitt High School. Coach Lanham commented on Stuck signing with Union, lamenting, "Morgan is a talented defender/midfielder and is very skilled with her left foot. She will be able to play many different positions for us this season."
The Lady Bulldogs have two preseason scrimmages on the 15th
of August against Eastern Kentucky and Lincoln Memorial, respectively. Union opens up its regular season schedule on August 27, as it will play host to Cumberland University.
