CANTON, Ohio - Union got the 2010 volleyball season underway by going 1-1 on the first day of the Malone (Ohio) University Classic Friday.

The Lady Bulldogs dropped a 3-0 decision to host Malone in the opener, losing 36-34, 25-18, 25-15. Union rebounded to sweep Concordia (Mich.) 3-0 by the scores of 25-14, 25-17, 25-13.

Union returns to action Saturday as it will take on Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) at 9 a.m. and Campbellsville (Ky.) at 11 a.m.

Against Malone, Union battled hard but came up on the short end of the 3-0 decision. The two squads went toe-to-toe in the first set with the Lady Pioneers finally pulling out the 36-34 outcome. The Lady Bulldogs continued to fight but Malone took the final two sets by the scores of 25-18, 25-15 for the win.

Junior transfer Vitoria Oliveria (Sao Paulo, Brazil) delivered 11 kills and 11 digs with freshman Karina Ramos (Presidente, Brazil) chipping 11 digs and nine kills. Caity Merritt (Abingdon, Va.) helped out with seven kills.

Senior Amanda Silva (Londrina, Brazil) delivered a team-high 26 digs with fellow senior Monica Moreland (Louisville, Ky.) registering 25 assists, seven digs and five kills.

In the finale, Union took care of business in cruising to the 25-14, 25-17, 25-13 victory over Concordia.

Moreland recorded 26 assists and seven digs with Silva notching a team-high eight digs.

Ramos led the attack with eight kills and seven digs with Oliveria contributing six kills and six digs. Linsey Ellis (Florence, Ky.) had seven digs as well.
