MONTREAT, N.C. - Union College came up short in its bid for an Appalachian Athletic Conference victory as host Montreat (N.C.) College posted a 2-1 victory Wednesday.

The loss dropped Union to 7-8-1 overall and 0-6-1 in the AAC, while Montreat improved to 13-3-1 overall and 6-1 in conference play. The win secured the regular-season conference championship for Montreat and makes the Cavaliers the No. 1 seed for the upcoming tournament. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, will enter the league tournament as the No. 8 seed and will play at Montreat on Tuesday. Game time has yet to be determined.

After a scoreless first half, Union broke the deadlock when Jonathan Sutton (Portsmouth, England) knocked in a loose ball to make it 1-0 early in the second half.

But the game took a turn for a worse from that point on.

Five minutes into the second half, Aaron Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio) received his second yellow card, forcing Union to play the final 40 minutes of the game a man down. Montreat was able to take advantage of the situation and netted two goals en route to the 2-1 decision.

The Bulldogs will close out the regular season Saturday when it plays host to Pikeville (Ky.) College at 4 p.m.
