BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The night didn't begin well for Union, but the Lady Bulldogs finished strong to hand visiting Milligan (Tenn.) a 3-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference defeat Tuesday.

Milligan (11-6 overall, 3-1 AAC) took the opening set 25-22, but Union (9-6 overall, 4-1 AAC) rallied to win the next three 25-17, 25-19, 25-10 in collecting the victory.

Freshman Karina Ramos (Presidente, Brazil) had a big match for the Lady Bulldogs as she hammered home 17 kills and posted a .342 hitting percentage to go along with her 12 digs. Junior Vitoria Oliveria (Sao Paulo, Brazil) helped out with 12 kills,13 digs and three solo blocks, and junior Kalia Yasak (Kula, Hawaii) served up 51 assists, 10 digs and four service aces.

In the first set, Union opened up an 8-4 lead and was up 12-9 when Milligan began to turn the tables. The Lady Buffaloes six straight points for a 15-12 edge. Milligan led by as much as 22-17 before Union rallied to pull within 23-22. However, Milligan netted the final two points for the 25-22 decision.

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the second set and never looked back. Milligan tried to come back but could not get any closer than 17-14 as Union took the set 25-17 to even the match at a set apiece.

In the third frame, Union scored the first three points and quickly built a 9-2 cushion. The margin eventually swelled to 21-10, but Milligan furiously fought back. The Lady Buffaloes pulled within 21-15 and 24-19. Yet, Union got the point it needed for the 25-19 decision to go up 2-1 in the match.

The fourth set was pure domination by Union. The Lady Bulldogs reeled off six points in a row to open things and sped to an 11-1 lead. The margin hovered between nine to 11 for much of the match before Union scored the final four points for the 25-10 outcome and the 3-1 match victory.

Amanda Silva (Londrina, Brazil) recorded 23 digs in the win. Lauren McMillian (Corbin, Ky.) and Amelia Cantrell (Georgetown, Ky.) each helped out with eight kills.

Union returns to action Wednesday at Lee (Tenn.). Match time is set for 6:30 p.m.
