BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Senior
transfer Wendi Messer made a big splash in her home debut as a Lady
Bulldog, draining five 3-pointers in netting a game-high 33 points to
pace Union to an 89-66 victory over visiting Mid-Continent (Ky.)
Messer (Barbourville, Ky.) hit 11-of-18 shots from the field and was 5-for-11 from long range in scoring her 33 points. Capri Savage (Orofino, Idaho) chipped in 19 points with Kara Pile (Fairdale, Ky.) knocking in 13.
The win improves Union to 2-1 overall, while Mid-Continent falls to 0-4.
The Lady Bulldogs lit it up from long range, hitting 15-of-33 behind the 3-point arc. Meanwhile, Mid-Continent hit only 6-of-15 of it 3-point attempts with Nicki Dewitt connecting on 4-of-7 as she finished with 12 points.
Union led from the opening tip, jumping out to a 5-0 advantage off a Messer jumper and a Savage trey. Mid-Continent cut the margin to 7-5, but Union used a 10-2 run to grab a 17-7 advantage by the 15:22 mark. The Lady Bulldogs led by as much as 14 points in the first half as it took a 43-31 cushion into the break.
A 13-2 surge coming out of the intermission sent Union to a 56-33 lead by the 16:30 mark. Messer accounted for eight points during the rally. The lead grew to 25 points before the Lady Cougars put together a 16-6 to cut the deficit to 74-59 with 5:00 on the clock.
The Lady Bulldogs regrouped and rebuilt the 20-point lead, eventually taking an 88-60 advantage following a Kelci Jones (Corbin, Ky.) bucket with 1:26 remaining. Mid-Continent scored six of the final seven points, making the final 89-66 in Union's favor.
Union hit 46.3 percent (31 of 67 shots) from the field but limited Mid-Continent to 34.7 percent (26 of 75) shooting.
In addition to her game-high 33 points, Messer led Union on the boards with eight rebounds. Alyson Roberts (Cookeville, Tenn.) scored only five points but dished out five assists and had three steals.
Mid-Continent outrebounded Union 48-40. Stephanie Malone paced the Lady Cougars with 17 points with Shanice Martin adding 12. Kaneisha Jones finished with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Union returns to action Friday and Saturday when it hosts the Lady Bulldog Classic. Union will face Emmanuel (Ga.) at 6 p.m. on Friday before playing Alice Lloyd (Ky.) at 6 p.m. Saturday.
