Union's Turrell Morris
(Columbus, Ohio) lead all scorers with 18 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 77-66 win over Southern Virginia Friday evening at Robsion Arena as part of the 2010 Union College Classic.
With the victory, Union moves to 1-3 on the year, while Southern Virginia falls to 1-1 with the loss.
In the first half, things went back and forth between the Bulldogs and Knights, but Union opened up a six point lead with 4:30 left (33-27) off a Cody Miller
(Barbourville, Ky.) lay-in. The last basket of the half was scored by Morris, who converted a strong lay-in with eight seconds left in the period to give Union a 37-30 lead at the half.
In the second half, Union stormed out of the locker room, opening up a 55-34 lead with 13 minutes left after rolling off a 18-4 run to start the half. This was all the Bulldogs needed to coast to their first victory of the season, as the closest Southern Virginia got to the Bulldog lead the rest of the period was nine with 16 seconds left in the contest.
Morris scored his 18 points on 9-for-17 shooting from the field. He also pulled down 10 rebounds to record the first double-double of the season for Union. Stuart Stamper
(HIndman, Ky.) came off the bench and added 14 points, shooting three-of-four from three point range, while Antonio Murry
(Nashville, Tenn.) had seven points and dished out six assists. For Southern Virginia, Spenser Briggs led the team with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Overall, Union shot an impressive 49.2% from the floor (32-65).
Union returns to action tomorrow night when they host Alice Lloyd in the finale of the 2010 UC Classic. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at Robsion Arena.
