BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union
hit the century mark for the second game in a row as the Lady Bulldogs
rolled to an 100-74 victory over visiting Asbury (Ky.) on Tuesday for
their fourth win in a row.
Five Lady Bulldogs scored in double figures with Wendi Messer (Barbourville, Ky.) leading the way with a game-high 22 points. She also grabbed a team-high six rebounds, while Amber Taylor (Clinton, Tenn.) chipped in 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Taylor also was 3-for-4 from 3-point range and dished out four assists.
Union (5-1 overall) got off to a slow start and found itself down 17-13 following a Laura Carroll jumper with 9:59 left in the first half. The Lady Bulldogs regrouped and used a 31-12 stretch to put themselves up 44-29 with 49 seconds to go in the period.
Asbury (3-5 overall) accounted for the final three points of the half to make it 44-32 at the break.
Coming out of the half, Union raced to a 54-34 advantage. A Kara Pile (Fairdale, Ky.) capped the 10-2 run with a layup.
The Lady Eagles tried to rally but could only cut the deficit to 56-44 at the 16:04 mark. Union then began to steadily push its lead to 20-plus points, leading by as much as 88-59 with 6:41 remaining. From that point on, Asbury never threatened again as Union coasted to the 100-74 decision.
After Messer and Taylor, Pile and Rebecca Gray (Georgetown, Ky.) paced Union with 11 points apiece. Pile also had four assists, while Laura Perkins (Myra, Ky.) scored 10 points on 3-for-3 shooting from the field as she nailed both of her 3-point attempts.
A large reason for its strong second-half surge was Union's 71.4 percent shooting during the final 20 minutes. Union finished the game making 57.9 percent from the field and went 12-for-27 from long range.
Meanwhile, Asbury hit 50 percent of its shots from the floor but was 6-of-16 on 3-pointers.
Carroll led the Lady Eagles with 19 points, while Lakin Griffin contributed 10 points and six rebounds.
Union returns to action Friday and Saturday at the Berea Pepsi Classic at Berea (Ky.) College. The Lady Bulldogs will face Wilberforce (Ohio) on Friday at 6 p.m. before taking on host Berea Saturday at 8 p.m.
