MONTREAT, N.C. - No. 5 seed Union College advanced to the Appalachian Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament semifinal round after defeating host No. 4 Montreat (N.C.) College in a shootout on Tuesday. After 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, the game came to a shootout, which the Lady Bulldogs won 5-3.
The match is officially a tie for both teams, but Union advances by virtue of winning the shootout.
Early on, it appeared Union (7-7-2 overall) was going to cruise to an easy victory as Heather Jaques (Manitoba, Canada) and Amanda Weber (Ontario, Canada) each scored for a 2-0 advantage. Montreat's Amanda Solesbee netted a goal in the 36th minute, making it 2-1 at the half.
Jaques scored her second goal of the game in the 54th minute, giving Union another two-goal lead. Weber had the assist.
However, Montreat (11-4-2 overall) fought back with goals by Hannah Davison and Brittnye Scott in the 55th and 72nd minutes, respectively, to tie the game at 3-3.
After two, 10-minute overtime periods, the match went to a shootout. The first two players for both teams scored, but in the third round, Renata Peixoto (Brasilia, Brazil) put Union up 3-2 as goalkeeper Brittany Puryear (Somerset, Ky.) blocked Davison's attempt.
Weber and Scott both found the back of the net in the fourth round, keeping the Lady Bulldogs' advantage at one. However, Karla Goncalves (Sao Paulo, Brazil) sealed the victory by beating Kate Thacker to the game-clinching goal.
Union outshot Montreat 21-20 and also held a slim edge in shots on goal at 9-8. Briann Bargo (Somerset, Ky.) set in goal for Union, making one save in 45 minutes of action. Puryear played the final 65 minutes of the match and recorded four saves in addition to the key stop in the shootout.
For Montreat, Thacker finished with six saves.
Union will face the winner of the game between No. 1 King (Tenn.) College and No. 8 Bluefield (Va.) College on Friday. The semifinal and championship rounds will be played in Chattanooga, Tenn.
