DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Union put up a valiant effort but came up short as host and No. 12 Embry-Riddle posted a 3-0 sweep in the NAIA Volleyball National Championship Opening Round on Saturday.

The Lady Eagles won by the scores of 25-17, 27-25, 25-18.

Union ends the season with a 25-13 overall records, while Embry-Riddle improves to 31-2 and advances to the final site for the national tournament, which is Sioux City, Iowa, on Nov. 30-Dec. 4.

Karina Ramos (Presidente, Brazil) had a solid match for the Lady Bulldogs as she posted nine kills and had a .750 hitting percentage as well as three block assists and two service aces. 

The three Lady Bulldog seniors all went down fighting. Monica Moreland (Louisville, Ky.) had 19 assists, 13 digs and two service aces, while Amanda Silva (Londrina, Brazil) had 18 digs. Maddie Peterson (Soda Springs, Idaho) registered five kills, three digs and two block assists.

Going into the match, the Lady Bulldogs knew it was going to be a daunting task as Embry-Riddle was undefeated at home. In fact, the Lady Eagles had only dropped one set at home all season.

Union led 14-13 in the first set, but Embry-Riddle closed out the frame on a 12-3 surge to claim the 25-17 decision.

In the second set, the Lady Bulldogs was a point away from stealing a set as they were up 24-22 when the Lady Eagles called a timeout. Embry-Riddle rallied to even the set at 24-24 before winning 27-25 for a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Not to discouraged, Union jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set and held a 7-3 advantage before Embry-Riddle battled back. The Lady Bulldogs did hold a slim 14-13 edge, but the Lady Eagles took 11 of the final 16 points to seal the 25-18 win.

Amelia Cantrell (Georgetown, Ky.) added six kills and two block assists for Union.

For Embry-Riddle, Abby Hall led the way with 13 kills with Gloria Kemp added nine.
