ADRIAN, Mich. - Wendi Messer
drained seven 3-pointers in netting a game-high 29 points, but it was
not enough as Union fell 77-71 to Spring Arbor (Mich.) in the
consolation game of the Siena Heights (Mich.) University Thanksgiving
Tournament on Saturday.
Messer (Barbourville, Ky.) was 11-for-23 from the floor and 7-for-13 from 3-point range as she earned All-Tournament Team honors.
The loss drops the Lady Bulldogs to 7-3 overall, while Spring Arbor improves to 5-4 on the year.
It was a tale of two halves as Union jumped out to a 24-11 advantage following a Messer trey with 9:06 left in the first half. Union led by as much as 30-11 with 6:17 to go, but Spring Arbor rallied to cut the margin to 35-34 at the half.
The Lady Bulldogs started the second half with a 5-0 surge. A Nikki Bustle (Waynesburg, Ky.) 3-pointer gave Union a 40-34 cushion with 18:23 remaining. However, Spring Arbor fought back, using a 10-2 to grab a 55-48 lead at the 8:34 mark.
Another Messer 3-pointer put Union up 59-57 with 5:53 to play. Yet, another 10-2 run by Spring Arbor but Union behind 69-61 with 2:14 left, and the Lady Bulldogs were never able to recover as Spring Arbor posted the 77-71 victory.
Union made one more field goal and 11 more 3-pointers than Spring Arbor, but Spring Arbor scored nearly a third of its points at the foul line in making 21-of-31 free throws. Meanwhile, Union was just 2-for-3 at the charity stripe.
After Messer, Bustle posted a season-high 18 points, while Kara Pile (Fairdale, Ky.) chipped in 12 points and four assists.
For Spring Arbor, Melissa Tejkl had 22 points and 11 rebounds with Kelly Bruggeman also posing a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Megan Bement knocked in 19 points as well.
Union returns to action Friday at 8 p.m. when it hosts Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) in the Lady Bulldog Classic.
