WILMORE, Ky. --
The Union College men's basketball team dropped a 93-89 decision to Ohio Christian on Friday afternoon. The game, played at Asbury University, was part of the 2010 Cecil C. Zweifel Classic.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 5-7 overall, while Ohio Christian improved to 8-4 with the win.
In the first half, Ohio Christian held a slim 42-40 lead at intermission. The Trailblazers were aided by a torrid shooting pace to take the lead, making 60
percent of their shots from the field in the period. Union stayed close
in the half and was led by Turrell Morris
(Columbus, Ohio), who had 10
points and pulled down six rebounds.
In the second half, the lead went back and forth throughout the first
five minutes, but Ohio Christian started to take control of
the contest at the 15 minute mark and took the biggest lead of the night
(63-55) with 14:26 left in the game. The Trailblazers continued to keep
the lead and eventually extended it out to 73-64 with 8:54 left.
The Bulldogs then made a strong comeback at the Ohio Christian lead,
eventually tying the game up at 77-all with 5:54 left after Cody Miller
(Barbourville, Ky.) drained a jumper in the lane. Union then took their first lead of the
half moments later when Morris made a jumper to make it 79-77 with 5:18
left. Ohio Christian, however, quickly tied the game up at 79, then
proceeded to go on a backbreaking 6-0 run to take the lead for good.
The closest Union got to the Ohio Christian lead the rest of the game
was with 1:20 remaining when a Ryan Young
(Waynesburg, Ky.) jumper made the score 87-86
in favor of Ohio Christian. The Trailblazers, however, salted the game
away at the free throw line over the final 60 seconds to pick up the
On the night, the Bulldogs had four players score in double-figures, led
by Morris who had 20 points and 12 rebounds to record his seventh
double-double of the season. Junior Payton Ponzer
(Independence, Ky.) had 16 points,
while Miller and Ian Davis
(Cherry Hill, N.J.) each had 13 and six rebounds. Young rounded
out the Bulldog double-digit scorers with 11 points.
Ohio Christian was led in the victory by Tirrell Cumberland, who had a game-high 25 points.
Union returns to action tomorrow at the Zweifel Classic when they take on Greenville College. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
