NEW ALBANY, Ind. - Host Indiana Southeast raced past Union on Saturday, hitting nearly 54 percent of its shots en route to the 89-74 victory.
Freshman Alyson Roberts (Baxter, Tenn.) scored a season-high 16 points in the loss, hitting 4-of-8 from 3-point range on the day. Freshman Amber Taylor (Clinton, Tenn.) and senior Wendi Messer (Barbourville, Ky.) helped out with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
The loss drops Union to 9-4 overall with IU-Southeast improving to 6-4 on the season.
Union struggled to find its shooting touch early on. Meanwhile, IU-Southeast hit nine of its first 11 shots in racing to a 22-9 advantage with 12:12 left in the first half. Union regrouped and mounted a 17-5 rally to cut the margin to 27-26 with 7:36 to go. During the run, Union got 3-pointers from Roberts, Messer and Courtney Thomas (Glasgow, Ky.).
The Lady Bulldogs eventually tied the game at 32-32 following a Messer jumper with 5:06 left. However, IU-Southeast did not give up the lead in opening period as it took a 41-39 edge into the break.
Down 46-41, Union used an 8-0 surge to grab a 49-46 lead. Yet, the lead was short-lived as IU-Southeast put together a 15-4 run in seizing a 64-56 advantage with 9:28 to play. From that point on, Union never threatened again as IU-Southeast led by as much as 17 points in posting the 89-74 decision.
IU-Southeast hit 53.6 percent (30-of-56 shots) from the field and sank 46.7 percent (7-of-15 shots) of its 3-point attempts. Conversely, Union went 25-for-59 (42.4 percent) from the field and made just 25 percent (6-of-24) from behind the arc.
Ashmere Woods led all scorers with 27 points with Whitney Duncan helping IU-Southeast out with 20. Megan Murphy chipped in 11.
IU-Southeast outrebounded Union 38-30, but Messer and Thomas tied for the game high with seven rebounds apiece.
Union returns to action Tuesday when it plays at Alice Lloyd (Ky.) at 5 p.m. The teams played once already this season with the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Eagles 104-76 on Nov. 13 in Barbourville.
