BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union
mounted a ferocious rally to close out the game, but the hole was too
deep to climb out of as Indiana Southeast handed the No. 24 Lady
Bulldogs a 72-63 loss in the Lady Bulldog Holiday Classic Thursday.
Following a Whitney Duncan free throw, Indiana Southeast led 55-28 with 10:39 remaining. Union stormed back with a 28-9 run, pulling within 64-56 following a Courtney Thomas (Glasgow, Ky.) bucket at the 2:31 mark. However, Union could not get any closer.
Indiana Southeast's lead dwindled to eight two more times, but the Grenadiers stood strong and left with the 72-63 victory.
The loss drops Union to 10-5 on the year, while Indiana Southeast improves to 10-4.
Kara Pile (Fairdale, Ky.) was the lone Lady Bulldog to score in double figures, finishing with 12 points. Alyson Roberts (Baxter, Tenn.) added nine points, while Thomas just missed posting a double-double with eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
Poor shooting was the Lady Bulldogs' nemesis from the outset. Union shots 25.6 percent (10-of-39 shots) from the field in the first half as Indiana Southeast took a 34-23 lead into the break.
As the second half unfolded, Union's offense remained on ice with the Lady Bulldogs only scoring five points during the first 9:21 of the period, allowing the Grenadiers to build a 55-28 advantage. Union reeled off 35 points in the final 10-plus minutes of the game, but it was too little, too late as Indiana Southeast held on for the 72-63 decision.
In the Classic's other game, Tennessee Wesleyan posted a 77-62 victory over Holy Cross (Ind.). Amy Jo Castor netted a game-high 22 points to pace Tennessee Wesleyan, while Jillian DeLucia paced Holy Cross with 20.
Union finished the game making 25-of-77 shots (32.5 percent) from the field and was 8-for-30 (26.7 percent) from 3-point range. Meanwhile, Indiana Southeast went 21-of-54 (38.9 percent) from the floor and 6-for-20 (30 percent) from long range.
Megan Murphy accounted for four of the Grenadiers' six 3-pointers as she went 4-for-5 in registering 21 points and 12 rebounds. Ashmere Woods followed with 16 points with Duncan and Alden Krausse each netting 10 points.
Union returns to action Jan. 6 as it opens Appalachian Athletic Conference play at Virginia Intermont. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
