BRISTOL, Va. - Four Lady Bulldogs scored in double figures as No. 24 Union opened Appalachian Athletic Conference play with an 80-69 victory over host Virginia Intermont on Thursday.

Senior Wendi Messer (Barbourville, Ky.) scored 14 of her team-high 17 points in the first half and narrowly missed posting a double-double, grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. Junior Kara Pile (Fairdale, Ky.) followed with 16 points and seven assists, while senior Capri Savage (Orofino, Idaho) and Laura Perkins (Myra, Ky.) each chipped in 12.

The win improves Union to 11-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Virginia Intermont falls to 7-10 overall and 0-1 in the AAC.

The Lady Cobras dominated in the paint, scoring 46 points in the lane. Union countered with an aerial assault in draining 15-of-33 shots (45.5 percent) from 3-point range. In fact, the Lady Bulldogs did better behind the arc than inside it as they made 43.4 percent (23-of-53 shots) from the floor.

The Lady Bulldog bench came up big, accounting for 29 points.

Union led 41-32 at the half and maintained a double-digit cushion throughout the second half en route to the win.

Lady Cobra Kayla Orrick recorded a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Haley Odle and Megan Fanney each registered 14 points, and Teonika Webb knocked in 10.

Virginia Intermont had a rough night shooting, going 28-of-72 (38.9 percent) from the field, 2-for-13 (15.4 percent) from long range and 11-of-19 (57.9 percent) at the foul line.

Union returns to action Saturday when it hosts Reinhardt (Ga.) in another conference tilt. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
