BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - No. 24 Union struggled to maintain any consistent flow offensive for much of the game, but a second-half surge provided the Lady Bulldogs enough cushion to pull out the 73-63 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory over visiting Reinhardt (Ga.) on Saturday.

Tied at 42-42, Union went on a 13-2 rally to open up a 55-44 lead with 8:29 to play. Capri Savage (Orofino, Idaho) and Alyson Roberts (Baxter, Tenn.) each netted five points during the run. Reinhardt (8-7 overall, 0-2 AAC) did not back down, cutting the margin to 62-59 following a Monique Blanding layup with 4:43 remaining.

However, the Lady Bulldogs (12-5 overall, 2-0 AAC) closed out the game with an 11-4 run to seal the 10-point victory. Rebecca Gray (Lexington, Ky.) netted five points down the stretch with Laura Perkins (Myra, Ky.) scoring four.

Union returns to action Wednesday at Bluefield (Va.) in another conference battle. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.

The first half left something to desire as neither team could find its rhythm. Union shot 43.3 percent (13-of-30 shots) from the floor but was 1-for-6 (16.7 percent) from 3-point range. Meanwhile, Reinhardt went 15-of-41 (36.6 percent) from the field and missed both 3-point attempts. At the foul line, the teams combined to 9-for-22.

Neither team had more than a five-point lead during the opening 20 minutes as Union used a 5-2 surge to end the period and take a 34-32 lead at the half.

The Lady Bulldogs opened the second half by racing to a 42-35 advantage, but the Lady Eagles reeled off seven points in a row to tie on a Kayla Aiken jumper with 13:03 to go. Union then used a 13-2 run to take the lead for good on its way to the 73-63 conference win.

Gray came off the bench to pace Union with 13 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists. Perkins and Savage each added 11 points, while Roberts chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.

For Reinhardt, Erin Courington and Jordan Huett-Marsh each posted double-doubles with Courington recording 16 points and 10 rebounds and Huett-March having 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs finished the game shooting 38.3 percent (23-of-60 shots) from the field and 38.5 percent (5-of-13 shots) from long range. Reinhardt hit 40.6 percent (28-of-69 shots) for the game and was 3-for-9 (33.3 percent) on its 3-point attempts.

Reinhardt won the battle on the boards with a 45-44 margin.
