BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - It wasn't the prettiest of games, but a win is a win especially when it's an Appalachian Athletic Conference contest. Union led for the majority of the game but needed a second-half surge to put away visiting Virginia Intermont 70-60 on Saturday.

Ca'Star Harper hit 1-of-2 free throws to pull VIC within 51-46 at the 7:59 mark. From that point on, Union stepped up its game, outscoring the Lady Cobras 19-14 the rest of the way to chalk up the 10-point victory.

The win improves the Lady Bulldogs' overall record to 15-8 and conference mark to 5-3. VIC falls to 10-14 overall and 3-5 in the AAC. The victory is Union's ninth straight over VIC as it has not lost to the Lady Cobras since an 80-60 decision on Jan. 6, 2007.

Both teams neither shot the ball nor took care of it well. Union shot only 33.3 percent (21-of-63 shots) from the field and 25.0 (11-of-44 shots) from 3-point range but did connect on 70.8 percent (17-of-24) of its free throws. Meanwhile, VIC made just 32.4 percent (24-of-74) from the floor, hit only 1-of-6 3-point attempts and shot 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from the foul line.

The teams combined for 54 turnovers and 106 rebounds with VIC winning the battle on the boards with a 60-46 edge.

Wendi Messer (Barbourville, Ky.) paced Union with 19 points and seven rebounds before leaving the game due to an injury. Alyson Roberts (Baxter, Tenn.) followed with 15 points and seven rebounds, and Laura Perkins (Myra, Ky.) came off the bench to chip in 12 points.

After VIC made it a 51-46 game with just under eight minutes to play, Union steadily added to its lead and took a 65-52 lead following a Cassandra Lawson (Lexington, Ky.) jumper with 3:00 to play.

The Lady Cobras get the lead down to 67-58 when Ashley Grimm hit a layup with 1:34 remaining, but they could not get any closer as the Lady Bulldogs held on for the 70-60 victory.

For VIC, Kayla Orrick led the way with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Grimm knocked in 11 to go with her nine rebounds.

Union returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Reinhardt (Ga.). Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
