BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Union men's tennis notched a 6-1 victory over host Western Kentucky University on Sunday, marking the second year in row the Bulldogs defeated a NCAA Division I squad. The Lady Bulldogs opened the season at WKU with a 6-1 loss.

With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 2-2 on the season. Union defeated Western Illinois 4-3 last year for the program's first-ever win over a NCAA Division I institution.

"Even though the final was 6-1, it was a war of a match," said Union coach Daniel Finn. "All of the matches were hard fought. The guys played very hard and with a lot of emotion. That was a very good team we defeated today."

According to NCAA Division I rules, one point is awarded to the team which wins two of the three doubles matches. Nicolas Ernst (Rietheim, Germany) and Pierre Vernin (Le Coteau, France) won their doubles match 8-4, while Yvon Haessig (Vancouver, Canada) and David Couronne (Gardanne, France) squeaked out a 9-8 (10-8) victory over Craig Kirchgessner and Caleb Ball. However, in the third doubles match, Bartos Micher (Junginen, Germany) and Fredrik Graaner (Stavanger, Norway) narrowly lost to Currie Martin and Lance Freeman 9-8 (7-3).

In singles play, Ernst downed Arul Selvan 6-1, 6-3 while Haessig defeated Kirchgessner 6-4, 6-1. Vernin fell to Martin in a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4 contest. Micher dropped the first set to Freeman but rallied for the 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 victory. Couronne posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Robert Whitmer, and Graaner completed the Bulldog victory with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Ball.

WKU is now 0-1 on the season.

In the women's match, the Lady Bulldogs were playing short-handed and suffered the 6-1 loss to WKU.

Union is now 0-1 on the year, while WKU is 1-0.

Union's lone victory came in singles play as Diane Proteau (Bussy Saint Georges, France) defeated McKinley Mason 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9).

The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs return to action Wednesday when they face another NCAA Division I squad in Morehead State (Ky.) at 1 p.m.
