BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Union College cycling team are off to a rocky start at the NCCA Division II National Championships Friday following the cross-country event in Banner Elk, N.C.

In the men's expert class, Greg Gibson (Salt Lake City, Utah) posted the Bulldogs' best finish as he crossed the line in eighth with a time of 2 hours, 37 minutes and 51 seconds. Jonathan Turner (Harlan, Ky.) was 25th in 2:58:06, while Zach Winn (Ontario, Canada) placed 38th in 3:19:23. In the B class, Zac Moore (Loveland, Ohio) came in third with a time of 2:28:19.

In the women's competition, Amy Russell (Monticello, Ky.) led the Lady Bulldogs with a 19th-place finish, while Karen Caldwell (Bristol, Tenn.) was 21st.

The second round of events continue Saturday with nationals wrapping up on Sunday.
