HARROGATE, Tenn. -- NCAA Division II foe Lincoln Memorial swept a doubleheader from the Union College softball team on Wednesday, winning game one 5-2 and game two 8-0 in six innings. The doubleheader was the season opener for Union.

With the losses, the Lady Bulldogs fell to 0-2 on the year, while Lincoln Memorial improved to 4-0 with the wins.

In game one, Lincoln Memorial was first to strike in the bottom of the second when Taylor McGinnis scored on a sacrifice fly by Dantae Reed. The score remained at 1-0 in favor of the Lady Railsplitters for the next two innings, but in the top of the fifth, Union got their first runs of the year on the board.

With two outs in the inning and Abby Sears at the plate, Lincoln Memorial's center fielder committed a fielding error after dropping a pop fly. The mistake enabled two runs to score, as Hillary Leftrick scored from second and Rachel Cogdill scored from third, to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Lady Bulldogs.

The lead, however, was short lived, as Lincoln Memorial rallied to score four runs in the bottom half of the fifth off of Lady Bulldog starter Katie Perkins to take an insurmountable three-run lead. The Lady Railsplitters then held off Union over the final two innings to earn the victory.

Perkins (0-1) took the loss for Union, going four and two thirds giving up five runs (all earned) and eight hits, while striking out two and surrendering a walk. At the plate, five Union players recorded a hit, as Cogdill ended the first game going 1-for-1 while forcing two walks. LMU's Meghan LaFevor (2-0) took the win, while Cierra Mudd earned her first save of the season in the victory.

In game two, Union had several chances in the early innings to score, but could not, as the Lady Bulldogs stranded a combined five runners on base in the first two innings. LMU took a 1-0 lead in the second, then blew the game open in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring seven combined runs in the innings to end the game (four in the fifth and three in the sixth).

Union was also hampered in the contest by five errors, as four of LMU's runs in the game were unearned.

The Lady Bulldogs were led at the plate in the game by catcher Ashley Tatman, who went 2-for-3 with a double and Falon Catalano, who also went 2-for-3. Catalno (0-1), who started the game in the circle, took the loss after giving up a run in three innings of work, while fanning two. LM'U's Cierra Mudd (1-0) earned the win after tossing five shutout innings, while striking out seven.

Union returns to action on Saturday when they take part in the Reinhardt Invitational in Waleska, Ga. The Lady Bulldogs will play three games on the day, taking on Thomas twice at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., and Emmanuel at 1:30 p.m.
