
BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Union College cycling team used a strong performance from Greg Gibson en route to a fourth-place finish at the NCCA Division II National Championship that concluded Sunday and was contested in Banner Elk, N.C.
This year’s fourth-place is the program’s sixth top-five finish and third in a row.
Gibson (Salt Lake City, Utah) collected 290 points for a fourth-place finish in the Division II Men’s Individual Omnium Championship standings. He picked up a fourth-place finish and spot on the podium in short track and finished eighth in the cross-country race.
Colin Cares from Colorado College captured the individual Division II omnium championship with 340 points. Warren Wilson’s Patrick Hurley took second with 302 points, four ahead of Patrick Means from Western Washington University. Appalachian State (N.C.) University’s Robert Jameson and his 278 points rounded out the top five.
Colorado School of Mines took the team championship with 636 points, ten points in front of Warren Wilson (N.C.) College. Mesa State (Colo.) College finished third with 535 points, followed by Union with 515 and Western State (Colo.) College collected 477 points to round out the top five.
Amy Russell (Monticello, Ky.) led the Lady Bulldogs with a 17th place run in the dual slalom.
Now the Union cycling team will prepare for the upcoming road-racing season this spring.
