BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - After a record-setting weekend, Union College senior quarterback Joey Waters was named the Mid-South Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Waters (McDonough, Ga.) threw for a school-record 434 yards and set career highs for completions (33) and attempts (57) as the Bulldogs nearly pulled off the upset against No. 9 UVa-Wise in Saturday's 42-37 battle.

The loss dropped Union to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in the Mid-South Conference East.

Union trailed 35-3 at the half and was down 42-3 early in the third quarter. However, Waters guided the Bulldogs on five scoring drives in the second half as they posted 34 unanswered points. Yet, it was not enough as UVa-Wise held on for the five-point win.

Waters had three touchdown passes in the game, the fourth time this season he has had three or more touchdown passes in a game. He has 20 on the season, one shy of the school record he already holds.

In addition to setting the single-game passing record, Waters set the single-season mark as he now has 2,397 passing yards on the year, eclipsing the old record of 2,373 set by Stanley Niece in 2000. Waters also became the first player in program history to pass for more than 2,000 yards in two different seasons.

On the season, Waters has completed 197-of-326 passes for 2,397 yards and 20 touchdowns.

This is the third time Waters has received this honor this season. He previously won the award on Sept. 10 and Oct. 8.

Union returns to action Saturday when it plays host to West Virginia Tech at 1:30 p.m. in MSC East play.
