ST. PETERS, Mo. -- Action at the 2011 NAIA Swimming & Diving
Championships concluded on Saturday night, as the Union women's swim
team finished the competition seventh overall, while the men's team
finished tenth. The men's team ended the competition with total of 137
points, while the womens team accumulated 187 points.
The first event of the evening for Union was the men's and women's 1650-free. On the men's side, Kyle Newhouse capped off his stellar weekend at the NAIA Championships with an eighth place finish, hitting the wall in 16:06.86 to smash a school record. In the women's portion of the event, Molly Fittro finished 14th overall in a time of 18:11.13.
Next up in the women's 100-free, sophomore Renata Cabral registered the best finish of the Championships for Union, placing fourth with a time of 52.26, a time that broke a school record. In the same event, Callie Harrigan was equally as impressive, finishing sixth with a mark of 52.75. Meanwhile, in the 200-breast, Edward Malick registered a top-five finish, placing fifth with a time of 2:04.61 (a new school record). In the same event, Luis Ambrosio finished in 10th with a mark of 2:06.01.
The last individual event of the Championships for Union was the women's 200-fly, where Tamsin Petersen placed 14th in 2:14.97. The final event of the Championships, the 400-free relay, saw the Union women's relay team place seventh in 3:36.43 (a new school record), while the men's relay squad finished 10th 3:14.89 (also a new school record).
Overall, Fresno Pacific on the team national championship on the men's side, while California Baptist won the women's national title.
