MARYVILLE, Mo. - The 11th-ranked Union men's tennis team saw its eight-match win streak come to a halt with a 7-2 loss Wednesday at Northwest Missouri State, the No. 19 team in NCAA Division II.
The loss drops Union to 10-4 on the season, while Northwest Missouri State improve to 5-1 overall. This was also the first loss the Bulldogs suffered to a NCAA Division II squad this season, putting them at 4-1.
The Bearcats took two of the three doubles matches. Nicolas Ernst (Rietheim, Germany) and Pierre Vernin (Le Coteau, France) lost their match 8-6 to Vijit Sehgal and Calvin Patterson, but Ernst and Vernin rallied from an 7-1 to nearly pull off the upset of the 25th-ranked NCAA Division II doubles team.
Yvon Haessig (Vancouver, Canada) and Fredrik Graaner (Stavanger, Norway) recorded the team's doubles victory with an 8-0 decision over Phillip Hultquist and Daniel Quesada.
Vernin scored Union's only point in singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Hultquist.
Union returns to action March 25 at Cumberlands (Ky.). Match time is set for 2 p.m.
