BARBOURVILLE, Ky. --
The Union College softball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Berea on Sunday at Union Field. The Lady Bulldogs captured game one, 2-1 and took game two by a 5-3 score.
With the wins, Union is now 13-13 on the year, while Berea dropped to 3-5 with the defeats.
In the first game, both teams failed to get much of any offense going in the first four innings, as both failed to get a run across the plate. Union threatened to finally break the scoreless tie in both the third and the fourth, but could not score, leaving five runners on base in the innings (two in the third and three in the fourth).
In the fifth, Union finally broke through and scored two runs, both with two outs. With Whitley Cochran
on second base, Abby Sears
roped an RBI single up the middle, scoring Cochran. After Ashley Tatman
reached on a single, Autumn Greenwell
had the second RBI single of the inning, scoring Sears and giving the Lady Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
In the sixth, Berea scored a run after Union committed two errors in the field to cut the UC lead in half. With runners of first and second with two outs, Union starter Randi Jo Powers forced a ground out to third to extinguish the Berea scoring threat. It was the last time the Mountaineers threatened to score the rest of the game, as they went down in order in the top of the seventh to give Union the victory.
Overall in the first game, Sears led the way at the dish going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Greenwell went 1-for-2 with an RBI. In the circle. Powers earned the complete game victory (2-0), throwing seven strong innings, giving up just an unearned run on four hits.
In game two, Union once again got on the scoreboard first, when Ashley Tatman
scored from third base on a Berea error in the bottom of the second. Berea answered the Union run in the top of the fourth to tie the game up at one. The damage could've been worse in the inning, but UC starter Katie Perkins
got out of a jam, as the Mountaineers left runners on second and third at the end of the inning.
Union then took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth, when Sears roped a two out, two-RBI single up the middle, scoring Morgan Brown
and Cochran. Berea, however, answered with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth to tie the game back up at 3-apiece.
In the bottom half of the sixth, Union put two runs on the scoreboard to take the lead for good. Greenwell started the inning off with a lead-off single, then after back-to-back outs, Brown hit a bloop doubled over the shortstop, scoring Bethany Rogers
, who pinch ran for Greenwell, from second. Union then added an insurance run when Leftrick hit an RBI single, scoring Brown.
In the seventh, Falon Catalano
came on and shut the door on Berea, as the Mountaineers went down in order to end the game.
Overall in the second game, Cochran was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Brown was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Sears, meanwhile, went 1-for-3 with two RBI. In the circle, Perkins took the win (4-5) after throwing six innings, giving up three runs and six hits, while striking out 10. Catalano earned her second save of the season after throwing the scoreless seventh.
The Lady Bulldogs return to action on Thursday when they host University of the Cumberlands in a doubleheader at Union Field. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
