BARBOURVILLE, Ky. --
Union College head swimming coach Rafael Forti
has announced that Austin Riggs has signed a letter of intent to join the Bulldog swimming program this fall.
Riggs, who's hometown is Barbourville, plans to swim freestyle events for Union.
"I am happy to have Austin joining our program," said Forti. "We have been observing him for some years now and we were finally able to make this official. He will add depth to our already competitive distance freestyle roster, and I know he will help us be even more competitive in those events."
"I am very excited at the opportunity to be a part of the Union College Swim Team," said Riggs. "Union has a great swimming program and I am honored to be a part of it. It is my desire to grow and develop under Coach Forti and be able to compete on the national level."
Riggs has prepped at Franklin Community High School in Franklin, Ind., where he was a four-year member of the varsity swim team.
There, he was a member of the All-Conference team and won Mid-State and Sectional Championships. He also qualified for the Indiana State High School Championship Meet this past season and ended his career with all-time top 15 times in the 200 and 500 freestyle events.
Forti continued, "Austin was able to swim his High School career in Indiana, which is one of the most competitive states for high school swimming in the country, and it will help him make the transition from high school to the collegiate level"
Riggs, the son of James and Debra Riggs, plans to major in psychology at Union.
