WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. --
The Union College softball team swept a doubleheader at the University of the Cumberlands on Wednesday evening, winning game one, 5-2 and game two, 2-1.
With the victories, Union improved to 15-16 on the year, while Cumberlands fell to 10-21 with the losses.
In game one, Union came from behind from an early deficit to take the win, snapping a three-game losing streak in the process.
Early on, Cumberlands took a 2-0 lead after scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning off of Union starter Katie Perkins
In the top half of the fourth, the Lady Bulldogs rallied for four runs to take what turned out to be an insurmountable 4-2 lead. Autumn Greenwell
led off the inning with a single, then after Rachel Cogdill
walked and Alissa Hampton
was hit by a pitch, the Lady Bulldogs had the bases loaded with one out. Cumberlands starter Angela Steuer then forced a Perkins grounder to third, in which Greenwell was thrown out at home on to record the second out.
It was here, with Whitley Cochran
at the plate, that the Lady Patriot third baseman committed a fielding error. Cogdill and Hampton scored on the play, tying the game up at two. Next up was Hillary Leftrick
, who roped a two-RBI, bases clearing triple to left center, scoring Perkins and Cochran and giving the Lady Bulldogs the two-run lead.
Union added one more insurance run in the top of the seventh, as Abby Sears
had a sacrifice RBI fly out, scoring Leftrick, who reached base on an error. The three-run lead was all the Lady Bulldogs needed the rest of the way, as Perkins (5-6) was impressive in the circle throughout to earn the complete game win, giving up six hits and two runs, while striking out two and not allowing a walk.
At the plate in the first game, Cochran led the way going 2-for-4 and a run scored, while Leftrick went 1-for-4 with two RBI and an run scored.
In game two, Union once again cashed in on a impressive pitching performance and capitalized on timely hitting to take the doubleheader sweep.
The Lady Bulldogs were first to strike on the scoreboard in the contest, scoring a run in the top of the third to take the early 1-0 lead. Sears recorded another RBI in the frame, as she grounded out to second with the bases loaded, scoring Alyson Roberts
on the play.
Cumberlands finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth off of Union starter Randie Jo Powers
, scoring a run to tie the game up at 1 going into the sixth. In the top half of the sixth, the Lady Bulldogs took the lead, as Falon Catalano
hit an eventual game-winning RBI single to left center with one out, scoring Lefrtick, who reached base after getting hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
From there, Cumberlands failed to muster much of anything off of Powers and Catalano, who came into the game in the seventh inning in a save situation. The Lady Patriots did threaten to score in the bottom half of the seventh, but with runners on first and second with two outs, Catalano recorded a game-ending strikeout to clinch the win for the Lady Bulldogs.
Overall in game two, Cochran was 2-for-4 to notch half of the hits recorded by Union in the contest, as Catalano (1-for-2, RBI) and Hampton (1-for-3) had the other hits for the Lady Bulldogs. In the circle, Powers (3-1) earned the win after going six full innings, giving up one run on four hits. Catalano earned her fourth save of the season in the victory after shutting the door on the Lady Patriot rally in the seventh.
The Lady Bulldogs return to action tomorrow when they host Milligan in an AAC doubleheader at Union Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
