ATHENS, Tenn. -- The Union College softball team dropped a pair of games to host Tennessee Wesleyan on Friday afternoon, losing game one 7-6 and dropping the second game 4-2 in Appalachian Athletic Conference action.

With the losses, Union fell to 16-19 overall on the year, 1-5 in the AAC, while Tennessee Wesleyan improved to 11-17, 2-2 in the AAC.

In game one, the Lady Bulldogs squandered away an impressive seventh inning comeback, as Tennessee Wesleyan took the run one win.

Early on, TWC leaped out to a lead against Union starter Randie Jo Powers, opening up a 5-1 lead entering the top of the seventh inning, as the only dent the Lady Bulldogs made up to that point on the scoreboard was in the fourth on an Abby Sears solo homer.

Here, however, Union made a thrilling comeback. The inning started off with Alissa Hampton and Alyson Roberts each reaching base on singles, then with Whitley Cochran at the dish, she knocked in the innings first run on an RBI single, scoring Hampton.

Next up was Sears, who cut the TWC lead down to 5-4 after a bases clearing, 2-RBI double. After a walk, Falon Catalano then came up and gave the Lady Bulldogs their first lead of the afternoon with another 2-RBI double, to give Union a 6-5 lead going into the bottom half of the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, however, Tennessee Wesleyan rallied for two runs to take the game one victory. Union's Katie Perkins relieved Powers in the inning in a save attempt, but could not slam the door on TWC, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits. The Lady Bulldogs also made a critical error in the inning with two outs that could've ended the contest and given Union the victory.

Overall, Sears led the Lady Bulldogs at the dish in game one, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a home run (her second of the season). Catalano also went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Cochran was 2-for-4 as well with an RBI. In the circle, Perkins (5-8) took the loss after blowing the save opportunity in the seventh.

In game two, Union took an early lead, but could not hold onto it, as Tennessee Wesleyan swept the doubleheader with the two-run victory.

In the second, the Lady Bulldogs were first to score, as Sears had another RBI single. Tennessee Wesleyan, however, countered with solo home runs in the third off of Union starer Catalano to tie the game up at one. Union took the lead back in the top half of the fourth, as Roberts had an RBI single, scoring Hampton, but in the home half, TWC hit another solo shot to tie the game again at two apiece.

In the fifth, Tennessee Wesleyan took the lead for good after the Lady Bulldogs committed two critical errors to keep the inning going. TWC added another run in the bottom of the sixth to preserve the two-run win, as the Union bats went cold over the final three innings.

In the circle, Catalano took the loss for Union (6-4) after going five inning, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits, with three strikeouts.

Union returns to action tomorrow, when they travel to Bryan for an AAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
