BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- The Union College softball team swept a doubleheader against Bluefield on Tuesday in AAC action at Union Field. The Lady Bulldogs captured game one 5-0, then pulled away for a 10-5 win in game two.

With the wins, Union moved to 19-22 overall, 3-7 in the AAC, while Bluefield fell 3-16 overall, 0-10 in the AAC with the losses.

In game one, Falon Catalano was the star, as she tossed a complete game shutout, breaking the Union school record for strikeouts in a game with 16 on the afternoon.

Catalano started the game off strong, striking out the first eight Bluefield batters that came to the plate in the first two and a half innings of play. Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs helped Catalano out at the plate, posting runs in the first four innings.

Union got their first two runs in the bottom of the first, as Abby Sears cracked an RBI double to left center scoring Hillary Leftrick.  A few batters later, Autumn Greenwell had an RBI single scoring Sears to make the score 2-0 in favor of Union after one. The Lady Bulldogs then added single runs in the second (Whitley Cochran scored on a fielding error) and the third (Morgan Brown had an RBI single scoring Ashley Tatman) to make it 4-0 in favor of Union after three.

The Lady Bulldogs added their fifth and final run in the fourth, when Catalano helped out her own cause hitting an RBI single up the middle, scoring Leftrick. It was more than enough for Catalano to record the victory (7-4), who went the distance, giving up just three runs and one walk, while shutting down the Bluefield offense all afternoon. With her 16 strikeouts, Catalano broke the UC record of 14 set by Sarah Driver in 2009.

At the plate in game one, Catalano was equally impressive, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Brown also went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Cochran also had a solid game one at the dish, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

In game two, Union exploded for seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pull away in completing the sweep.

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first inning, as Catalano and Tatman hit a pair of RBI singles. Union added another run in the bottom of the third to increase the lead to 3-1, with Sears hitting an RBI double. Bluefield, however, stormed back, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead.

Union, however, pulled away in the bottom half, scoring five runs to take the lead back at 8-4. After Bluefield added another run in the top of the sixth to make it 8-5, the Lady Bulldogs scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to increase their lead to five runs.

Overall at the plate, Catalano was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Tatman went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Cochran also had an impressive second game, going 3-for-3 with four runs scored and a walk. In the circle, starter Randie Jo Powers (4-2) earned the complete game win, as only three of the five runs she gave up on the day were earned.

The Lady Bulldogs return to action on Thursday when they host Virginia Intermont in an AAC doubleheader at Union Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
