Softball - Mon, Apr. 18, 2011
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- The Union College softball team dropped a pair of games to NCAA Division II member Lincoln Memorial on Monday afternoon at Union Field. The Lady Buldogs dropped game one 4-1, then lost the second game of the doubleheader, 9-4.

With the losses, Union fell to 21-26 on the year, while Lincoln Memorial improved to 27-22 with the victories.

In the first game, Union was hampered by mistakes and missed opportunities, as LMU took the three-run victory.

In the first three innings of the contest, both teams failed to get much offense going, as Union starter Randie Jo Powers held the Lady Railsplitters scoreless over that span, while LMU starter Chelsea Mudd did the same against the Lady Bulldog lineup. In the top of the fourth with two outs, LMU's Sarah Walz broke the scoreless tie, hitting a two run homer over the left center field fence to give the Lady Railsplitters a 2-0 lead.

LMU added another run in the top of the sixth to extend their lead out to 3-0, but Union struck back in the bottom of the sixth with a run of their own when Morgan Brown hit an RBI single to left, scoring Falon Catalano, who led the inning off with a single, making it 3-1. The Lady Bulldogs, however, left the bases loaded in the inning without inflicting more damage, as Katie Jo Gentry came out of the LMU bullpen to strike out back-to-back batters.

The Lady Railsplitters then added an insurance run in the top half of the seventh to regain a three run lead. Union made one more attempt at a comeback in the bottom half of the inning, but failed to cash in on two LMU errors, as the game ended on a double play with runners on the corners.

Overall, Alissa Hampton led Union at the dish going 3-for-3, while Autumn Greenwell went 2-for-3. In the pitching circle, Powers was the loser (4-4), going a full seven innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on eight hits, while striking out three.

In game two, LMU struck early and never looked back, as the Lady Railsplitters took the five-run win to complete the sweep.

LMU got on the board quickly, scoring a run in the first off of Union starter Alissa Hampton. They added three more runs in the top of the third inning off of Hampton, then tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth and fifth to take a what looked  to be a comfortable 6-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the fifth.

The Lady Bulldogs, however, rallied in the inning, scoring four runs to cut their deficit down to two runs. Alyson Roberts had an RBI single in the frame (scoring Morgan Brown, who reached on a walk), then with the bases loaded, Hillary Leftrick forced an RBI walk, scoring Powers from third. Catalano then came up and roped an two-RBI single to right, scoring Leftirck and Whitley Cochran to cut the lead the LMU lead down to 6-4 entering the sixth.

LMU, however, put the game away over the final two innings, scoring three runs (one in the sixth and two in the seventh), while the Lady Bulldogs went down in order in both innings as LMU completed the sweep.

Overall, Union only recorded four hits in the game, with Cochran, Leftrick, Catalano and Roberts recording the Lady Bulldogs' lone hits in the contest. In the circle, Hampton was the loser (1-2) after giving up four runs on eight hits in just three innings of work.

Union returns to action on Friday when they host Pikeville in the team's regular season finale. First pitch of the doubleheader at Union Field is set for 1 p.m.
