JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. --
Union freshman John Luther
captured the men's most outstanding athlete award at the 2011 Appalachian Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, which was held today at Sidney Smallwood Track. As a team, both Union men's and women's teams finished second overall at the meet.
Luther (Calhoun, Ga.) paced the men's team on the day, resetting the conference record books with is performance in the shot put. He posted a final throw of 45 feet, 7.25 inches, which shattered the AAC record in the event (13.24 meters), which stood since 2007. He also placed second in the discus with a throw of 129 feet, eight inches. Both marks were new school records in their events as well.
Meanwhile, Jaquan Holland
(Long Island, N.Y.) captured the 400m dash after crossing the finish line 49.11, while Steven Carron
(Chicago, Ill.) placed second in the 100m dash with at time of 11.25 and third in the 400m hurdles in 1:05.56. Finishing off the performances of note for the Bulldogs was Issac Kangogo
(Eldoret, Kenya), who finished third in the 1500m in 4:13.11.
For the women, Naudine Coulson
(Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) took the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:11.48 (which was a new school record), while the Lady Bulldog 4x100m relay squad finished first overall after finishing in 53.85. In the field events, Coulson was second in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, 4 inches, while Maddie Peterson was placed second in the discus with a throw of 114 feet, eight inches.
In the women and men's team events, Milligan captured both sides of the AAC Championship garnering 60 points on the women's side and 55 points on the men's side.
