WILMORE, Ky. – The Union College women’s swimming team set two new program records and reached two B-cuts in a dual meet held at Asbury (Ky.) College.
Eden Ellison (Tamms, Ill.) broke her own school record in the 100-yard butterfly with a 1 minute and 11.73 seconds performance. She lowered her record by 1.27 seconds.
The 200 medley relay record also went down in the event. Kristina Kirk (Versailles, Ky.), Mollie Messmer (Scott City, Mo.), Kelli Rogers (Elizabethtown, Ky.) and Ellison used a time of 2:06.51 to set the new mark and improved on the group’s A-cut NAIA National Championship qualifying time.
Kirk, Ellison, Rogers and Messmer also just missed an automatic national qualifying time in the 200 freestyle. Their time of 1:55.40 was 0.01 seconds over the mark.
“I was very glad to see how our relays swam today,” Union coach Rafael Forti commented. “We are looking very good on all of them, and I am sure they will improve their marks even more in meets to come.”
Messmer and Kirk both obtained national B qualifying marks in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, respectively. Messmer’s time was 2:11.88, and Kirk finished at the 1:09.74 mark.
“It was a very fast meet and all teams were looking really strong,” Forti added. “We were able to swim faster than in our previous meet, obtaining new cuts, team records, and personal bests.”
The Lady Bulldogs (0-3 overall) suffered a pair of defeats in the team standings. The host Asbury scored 96 points compared to Union’s 15 and the Lady Bulldogs lost to Transylvania (Ky.) University, 94-11.
Union will host Eastern Kentucky University and Milligan (Tenn.) College Saturday for a 1 p.m. dual meet.
