BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Zach Eagler is starting off the 2011 season off well as the Union linebacker was named to the 2011 Consensus Draft Services (CDS) NAIA Preseason All-American Team.
The Mid-South Conference is well represented on the CDS preseason squad as Eagler is one of seven from the league to earn the recognition. In all, 13 players made up the offensive squad with 14 filling out the defensive slots.
Eagler, a junior from Florence, Ky., made the 2010 MSC West All-Conference Team as an honorable mention as he lead the Bulldogs with 86 total tackles. Three times he recorded double-digit tackles, posting a career-high 12 stops twice. Eagler forced three fumbles and recovered one, returning it 71 yards for a touchdown.
In addition, the 5-foot-11 Eagler recorded 3.5 tackles for a loss, one interception, one pass deflection and two quarterback hurries.
The Bulldog defense ranked No. 11 in the NAIA last season in Pass Defense Per Game, allowing only 153 passing yards an outing. Meanwhile, Eagler ranked seventh in the nation in Forced Fumbles Per Game at 0.300.
Within the MSC, Eagler tied for first in Forced Fumbles Per Game and fifth in Tackles Per Game (7.8). Union ranked fifth in the conference in Total Defense, allowing 373.8 yards per game. The Bulldogs tied for fourth in Turnover Margin as it forced 24 turnovers and coughed the ball up only 20 times. Meanwhile, Union's pass defense was tops in the MSC with the Bulldogs also ranking second in Sacks Per Game with 1.9.
