BARBOURVILLE, Ky. --
Emmanuel College scored twice in the second half, and stymied Union College offensively, as the Lions picked up a 2-0 victory over the Bulldogs in the first game of the 2011 Golden Corral Bulldog Classic at Burch/Nau field.
With the loss, Union dropped to 0-1-0 on the year, while Emmanuel improved to 1-0-0.
In the first half, both teams had opportunities to notch their first goal of the season, but were denied by the strong play of the goalkeepers: Emmanuel's Anel Little, and Union's true freshman starter Andrew Metcalf
(Chester, England). In the first 45, Metcalf stopped six shots, while Little stopped four, to make the game scoreless going into the second half.
In the second half, Emmanuel controlled the pace for the majority of the period, but failed to crack the scoreless tie. One opportunity came at the 55-minute mark, but a free kick inside the box was blocked by the Union defense to keep the tie intact.
Unfortunately for Union, Emmanuel finally cashed in on an opportunity in the 70th minute, when Scott Purdue lofted a ball near net from 30 yards out that was mishandled by Metcalf, and trickled into the net to break the scoreless tie.
The Lions added another goal in the 84th minute when Eddie Green connected on a header off a Purdue cross. The two goal deficit was too much for Union to come back from, as Emmanuel notched a two goal victory to open the season.
Overall, Emmanuel outshot Union 22-8, and 14-3 in the second half. Jamie Cozens
(Southampton, England) took two shots on goal for Union, while Metcalf had a solid showing in his fist collegiate start, making seven saves in 90 minutes of action.
The Bulldogs will return to the pitch tomorrow when they take on Cumberland University, (who won the last match of the day against Berea, 9-0) to finish off the 2011 Golden Corral Bulldog Classic. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
