BARBOURVILLE, Ky. --
Cumberland University's Hel Dimantas Farias scored the game winner in the 69th minute to push the visiting Bulldogs to a 2-1 victory over Union College in NAIA women's soccer action on Friday at Burch/Nau Field. The contest was apart of the 2011 Lady Bulldog Classic.
With the loss, Union dropped to 0-1-0 on the year, while Cumberland improved to 1-0-0.
In the first half, Cumberland was the aggressor, out shooting the Lady Bulldogs 9-1 in the period. UC goalie Stephanie Burton
(Queensland, Australia), who was making her first start in between the pipes for the Lady Bulldogs, stopped five shots to keep the game scoreless in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, Cumberland caught a break in the 61st minute when a Union defender was called for a foul deep in the box. Because of the call, Cumberland's Rhianne Parson got a chance to try a penalty kick, and made it, to break the scoreless tie and give CU a 1-0 lead.
The lead was very short lived, however, as Union aggressively pushed the ball back down the field. True freshman Helen Weber
(Marburg, Germany) went coast-to-coast and fired a shot from 15 yards out that went over the head of Cumberland goalie Elizabeth Surdam, and into the back of the net. Just 27 seconds after giving up the lead, Union notched the game up at one apiece.
In the 69th minute, Cumberland took the lead for good on Dinantas Farias' goal. The goal came on a free kick from five yards out, as CU took a one-goal advantage going into the final 20 minutes of action. Union could not capitalize on the few chances they had the rest of the way, as Cumberland hung on for the season opening victory.
Overall, Union was out shot 18-4 in the match, as Burton kept the Lady Bulldogs afloat all day, making eight saves in net in 90 minutes of action. Nikki Jeck
(Richmond, Ky.) took three of Union's four shots in the match, two of which were on goal.
The Lady Bulldogs return to the pitch on Sunday, when they play the finale of the 2011 Lady Bulldog Classic against Barton (N.C.) at 1 p.m. at Burch/Nau Field. Cumberland will end their weekend with a match against Barton tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
