BARBOURVILLE, Ky. --
Union College freshman Helen Weber
scored three times to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a dominating 7-1 win over NCAA Division II foe Barton (N.C.) on Sunday at Burch/Nau Field in women's soccer action. The game was the finale of the 2011 Lady Bulldog Classic.
With the win, Union moved to 1-1 on the year, and gave first year head coach Camila Mendes
the first victory of her head coaching career.
In the first period, Union cracked a scoreless tie in the 14th minute when senior Stephanie Cagle
(Independence, Ky.) scored the first goal of her season unassisted. Cagle put the ball into the back of the net off a deflected shot to give the Lady Bulldogs the early 1-0 lead.
For the rest of the period, Union was the aggressor on the offensive end, taking 10 shots, compared to just two for Barton. But, the Lady Bulldogs could not find the back of the net and the game remained at the 1-0 score after the first 45 minutes of play. Barton was held afloat in the half by goalie Carson Moore, who made six saves in net.
In the second half, the Lady Bulldogs dominated the entire period, scoring six goals to put the game completely out of the visiting Bulldogs' reach.
The first goal came just three minutes into the period, as Weber (Marburg, Germany) scored her first goal of the day off a Jenn Sckirl
(Edmonton Alberta, Canada) pass. Just 13 seconds later, Weber added another goal, unassisted, and just like that Union was up by a comfortable 3-0 margin.
The goals kept coming as the half wore on. In the 54th minute, Nikki Jeck
(RIchmond, Ky.) scored her first goal of the year to make the score 4-0, then 13 minutes later in the 67th minute, Weber finished off the hat trick off a cross from Jeck, making the score 5-0. In the 69th minute, Sckril got in on the scoring act with her first goal of the season to make it 6-0 in favor of Union.
In the 72nd minute, Barton finally added a score, as Breanna Briggs scored on a long kick from 20 yards out. The final score of the day came off Sckril's foot in the 78th minute, unassisted, as the Lady Bulldogs capped off a dominating second half recording an impressive six goal victory.
Overall, Union outshot Barton 20-7 in the contest. UC goalie Stephanie Burton
(Queensland, Australia) earned the win after 72 minutes of action in between the pipes, not giving up a goal and making two saves. Also, Weber has now scored four goals in the first two games of her Union career, as she netted the only score in UC's 2-1 loss on Friday to Cumberland.
The Lady Bulldogs return to the pitch on Saturday when they host Georgetown (Ky.) at Burch/Nau Field. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
