BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- The Union College cycling team opened their 2011 season this past weekend at East Tennessee State in Johnson City, Tenn., and the Bulldogs registered several impressive individual performances.

"I was very pleased with the way our guys and girls competed," said head coach Chuck Coffey. "Most of all, I was really impressed with the way our newcomers performed in their first races. Overall, it was a great weekend for us."

On the men's side, Union was paced by Wesley Lamberson (Limestone, Tenn.), who had his best finish of the weekend in the short track cross country, placing 2nd. Lamberson also finished third in the cross country, 5th in the dual slalom, and 11th in the downhill.

Other top finishers for the men included Brad Nelson (Carmel, Ind.), who finished 6th in cross country, 7th in the dual slalom, and 8th in the short track, while Bennett Winn finished 3rd in the dual slalom, and 12th in the downhill. Drake Lindsey was 8th in the cross country and 10th in the short track, while Mike Baird was 8th in the short track and 9th in the cross country (both events were "B" events).

On the women's side, Elisa Otter paced the squad, finishing 2nd in the dual slalom, 3rd in the cross country, 5th in the downhill, and 6th in the short track. Kara Uhl placed 6th in the downhill, and 8th cross country, while Maria Esswein was 6th in the cross country. Catherine Harnden (Ontario, Canada) rounded out the top finisher with a 7th place finish in the downhill.

The Union cycling team returns to the course on this weekend when they travel to Florida State on Friday and Saturday.
