BARBOURVILLE, Ky. --
Reinhardt scored two first half goals, and never looked back, in a 3-1 victory over the Union College women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon at Burch/Nau Field. The match was the 2011 Appalachian Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
With the win, Reinhardt improved to 5-1-2 on the year, 1-0 in the AAC, while Union dropped to 3-3, 0-1 in the AAC.
In the first half, Reinhardt got on the board first in the 18th minute when Elizabeth Waite scored off a cross from 15 yards out to make it 1-0 in favor of the Lady Eagles.
Roughly six minutes later, Reinhardt increased the lead to 2-0 when Katherine Amatulli scored off a goal save deflection. The 2-0 ledger remained through the rest of the period, as the Lady Eagles rode a two-goal lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, Union came out aggressive, and finally got on the scoreboard when Sofie Jorgensen
(Oksbol, Denmark) scored, unassisted, in the 63rd minute. The goal was the third of the year for the sophomore, and the Lady Bulldogs found themselves down 2-1.
Reinhardt, however, grabbed any momentum that came Union's way after the score, and essentially put the match away three minutes later, when Krista Barikos scored unassisted from 10 yards out to give Reinhardt back a two-goal lead.
The lead was too much for Union to come back from, as the Lady Eagles held off the Lady Bulldogs the rest of the way to earn their first AAC win of the year.
Overall, Reinhardt outshot Union 15-12 in the match, however, Union had a 9-0 advantage on corner kicks. Reinhardt goalie Kaliegh Clarke earned the win after making six saves in net, while UC's Stephanie Burton
(Queensland, Australia) was the loser, despite making nine saves in between the pipes for Union.
The Lady Bulldogs will look to bounce back on Tuesday when they host University of the Cumberlands at Burch/Nau Field. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
