WISE, Va. - Bulldog running back Rob Brownposted his second two-touchdown game of the season and quarterback Ryan Mosestossed for season-best 238 yards, but it was not enough as Union dropped a 34-24 decision to host UVa-Wise Saturday.
The Bulldogs (1-3 overall) dominated the stat sheet, outgaining the Cavaliers 392-290 and maintaining possession for 37 minutes and 40 seconds. Union reeled off 92 offensive plays to UVa-Wise's 49.
Yet, three second-half turnovers by the Bulldogs resulted in 14 points for the Cavaliers (3-1 overall), allowing the hosts to overcome a 10-point deficit en route to the 10-point victory.
Union returns to action Saturday when it plays hosts to Cumberlands (Ky.) in the Bulldogs' first Mid-South Conference West game of the season. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
Down 14-7 after the first period, Union dominated the second quarter as it ate 12:32 off the clock. The Bulldogs ran a combined 33 plays on their two scoring drives in the frame.
Chad Boyington (Stockbridge, Ga.) made it a four-point game with a 31-yard field goal with 9:56 left in the half. After forcing the Cavaliers to go three and out, Brown (Daytona, Fla.) capped a 17-play, 68-yard drive with a 3-yard run to put Union up 17-14 with 47 seconds remaining in the second.
Early in the third, Brown tacked on his second touchdown of the day on a 2-yard scamper to stretch Union's lead to 24-14 with 10:10 still on the clock.
But then, the game turned.
Micah Cunningham hit Tyrone Jefferson for a 64-yard scoring play with 9:46 left in the third to cut Union's lead to 24-21. With 3:48 to go in the third, Lonell Parker recovered a Union fumble on a punt return and took it 45 yards for a touchdown to send the Cavaliers ahead 28-24.
Another Bulldog fumble resulted in another Cavalier score early in the fourth quarter. Union lost the ball with 2:39 left in the third. Eight plays and 39 yards later, Stewart Robertson punched the ball in from the 3-yard line to make it 34-24 with 14:06 to play in the game. Bert Brown (Daytona, Fla.) blocked the PAT to keep it a 10-point game.
Union tried to rally, but a late interception dashed any comeback hopes the Bulldogs had.
Rob Brown carried the ball for a career-high 25 times for a total of 90 yards and two scores. Moses (Williamsburg, Ky.) had his best day in the pocket, completing 22-of-38 passes for 238 yards and a touchdown.
Rolando Dyer (Lawrenceville, Ga.) had four catches for 30 yards, while Demetrius Hicks (Frankfort, Ky.) hauled in three passes for 42 yards and a score. With their receptions, Hick and Dyer both now 60 career receptions, making them the 19th and 20th players to do so in program history.
Domonique Jefferson (Lawrenceville, Ga.) had his best game of the season with four catches for 53 yards. In all, Moses hooked up with eight different receivers on the night.
