BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- Marc Miller scored two goals to lead the way, as the Union College men's soccer team shutout visiting Brescia, 5-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Burch/Nau Field.

With the victory, the Bulldogs improved to 6-6-1 overall, while Brescia fell to 0-12 on the season with the defeat.

In the first period, Union got on the board in the 15th minute on Miller's (Winchester, Ky.) first goal of the afternoon, scored three yards inside the box. Sideek Sanogo (Ivory Coast) assisted the play, crossing the ball to Miller, as the Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead.

The score, however, was the only one Union could tally in the first 45 minutes. Brescia goalie Mike Guillat was impressive in net, as he kept the Bearcats afloat making three saves in the period. So, despite outshooting Brescia 10-4 in the period, Union went into the locker room at half up just a goal.

Things changed in the second half, as the Bulldogs exploded on offense, scoring four goals in the period.

The first was scored by Miller, his second of the day, and sixth of the season in the 51st minute. Jonathan Watson (Kirriemuir, Scotland) was credited with an assist on the score from five yards out, as Union took a 2-0 lead.

In the 63rd minute, Jamie Cozens (Southampton, England) got in on the scoring act when he tallied his third goal of the season, unassisted, off a deflected shot on net. The goal made it 3-0 in favor of Union.

The Bulldogs then added the final two goals of the match within minutes of each other.

First, in the 74th minute, Chris Elliott (Isle of Wight, England) scored his second goal of the season on a free kick from 10 yards out, making it 4-0. The final goal of the afternoon was scored in the 76th minute, as Damian Hobson (Dayton, Ohio) scored his third goal of the season off a Thales Galan (Santa Andzie, Brazil) pass, giving UC a five-goal lead.

Overall, Union outshot Brescia 24-5 in the match, and held a decisive 10-1 advantage on corner kicks. In net, Andrew Metcalf (Chester, England), the reigning AAC Defensive Player of the Week, was strong again for Union, making two saves in over 74 minutes of shutout work in between the pipes.

Union returns to the pitch on Saturday when they host Montreat in an AAC tilt. The match is the team's annual homecoming contest, and is also senior day. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Burch/Nau Field.
