BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -
- Union College's Helen Weber
scored the eventual game winner in the 49th minute, as the Lady Bulldogs used strong defense to knock off Montreat, 2-1, in AAC women's soccer action on Saturday at Bulldog Field.
With the win, Union improved to 8-4 overall, 3-2 in the AAC, while Montreat fell to 9-5-1, 2-3 in the AAC with the loss.
In the first half, Union was first to strike, as sophomore Sofie Jorgensen
(Oksbol, Denmark) scored her team-leading 11th goal of the season off an assist from Weber (Marburg, Germany). The score, which was from two yards out, gave the Lady Bulldogs the early 1-0 lead.
Montreat, however, struck back, tying the match up at one in the 22nd minute when Lauren Cantin scored an unassisted goal. The rest of the period saw both teams have chances on net, but neither cashed in, and the match remained tied going into the locker room for halftime.
In the onset of the second half, Weber took a pass off a winding free kick from Jorgensen, and fired a shot that gently fell into the corner of the net, giving Union the one-score lead. The goal was the 10th of the season for the freshman Weber.
The rest of the match saw the Lady Bulldogs play punishing defense, allowing only two shots the entire half, none of which were on net. This defensive effort, combined with smart play on offense, catapulted the Lady Bulldogs to an important AAC win.
Overall, Union outshot Montreat 10-8 (6-2 in the second half), while Montreat held a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks. Union goalie Stephanie Burton
(Queensland, Australia) won the game in net, despite making just one save on the afternoon.
Weber's game-winner was her third of the year, and her second in as many matches.
The Lady Bulldogs return to action on Monday when they host Tennessee Wesleyan at Burch/Nau Field in an AAC tilt. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
