BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union eyed a potential upset Thursday, but No. 4 Lee (Tenn.) proved to be more than up for the task as the visiting Lady Flames posted the 3-0 sweep.
Lee netted the 25-11, 25-13, 25-19 decision to improve to 23-2 overall. The loss drops Union to 13-13 on the season.
Playing only two sets, freshman Paige Moore (Louisville, Ky.) led Union with six kills and added two digs in the loss. Lauren McMillan (Corbin, Ky.) followed with three kills, and Brooke Porter (Louisville, Ky.) notched 13 digs.
Union kept the first set close early on and trailed 11-8 at one point. However, Lee reeled off five consecutive points to fuel a 14-3 surge to close out the set and win 25-11.
In the second set, Lee maintained control early on and owned a 15-7 lead. Moore then entered the match for the first time and promptly recorded three kills in a row to pull Union within 15-10. Yet, the Lady Flames responded by closing out the frame on a 10-3 run for a 25-13 decision.
The Lady Bulldogs went toe-to-toe with the Lady Flames in the third set. Lee opened up an 8-2 advantage, forcing Union to call time out. Union bounced back, scoring six of the next eight points to pull within 10-8. Lee's lead grew to 17-11 as it held on for the 25-19 decision and the 3-0 sweep.
Irene Ojukwu led Lee with nine kills to go along with three block assists, while Marija Zelenovic followed with seven kills and four block assists.
Union returns to action Wednesday when it plays host to Bluefield (Va.) in Appalachian Athletic Conference play. Match time is set for 6:30 p.m.
