COLUMBIA, S.C. --
Sophomore Sofie Jorgensen
's goal four minutes into the first overtime period lifted the Union College women's soccer team to a thrilling 3-2 victory at Columbia (S.C.) on Saturday in Appalachian Athletic Conference action. The match was the regular season finale for Union.
With the win, UC ends the regular year with a 9-7 overall mark, 4-3 in the AAC. Columbia ends the year 8-6-4 overall, 1-4-2 in the AAC.
In the first half, Union raced out to a quick 1-0 lead when freshman Helen Weber
(Marburg, Germany) scored her 11th goal of the season 3:45 into the match. Jorgensen (Oklsbol, Denmark) recorded an assist on the play, as the Lady Bulldogs took a quick one score lead.
The Lady Bulldogs extended the lead out to 2-0 in the 20th minute when Jenn Sckirl
(Edmonton, Canada) scored her fourth goal of the season off a Weber assist. Columbia, however, would not go away quietly in the half, as Jessica Martinez scored in the 28th minute to cut the UC lead in half to 2-1 as the game went into intermission.
In the second half, the Koalas completed the comeback in the 52nd minute when Emily Harris scored, knotting the game up at two. The match would remain tied over the rest of regulation, as the contest went into overtime after 90 minutes of play.
This set the stage for Jorgensen's golden goal in the 94th minute, giving the Lady Bulldogs the thrilling win. Jorgensen scored the goal unassisted, as she dribbled the ball past three defenders on her way to the net from midfield. She then fired a shot from just outside the box into the back of the net, giving Union the victory.
The goal was the 13th of the season for Jorgensen, and her third game-winner of the year.
Union returns to the pitch next weekend when they take part in the quarterfinal round of the 2011 AAC Women's Soccer Tournament. Information on the tournament will be released later this weekend.
