BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- The Union College women's soccer team is ready to open play in the 2011 Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament tomorrow afternoon, as they host Montreat in the quarterfinal round at Burch/Nau Field. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.

Union, who enters the tournament as the fourth seed, finished the year 9-7 overall and 4-3 in the AAC, while Montreat is the fifth seed, finishing the year 11-6-1 overall, 3-4 in the AAC.

"I expect the game to be hard-fought," said head coach Camila Mendes. "Even though we beat [Montreat] during the regular season, it was a very close game. Both teams created chances to score and win the game. I believe we are ready to go, especially after winning our last game the way we did in overtime."

Union comes into the match led offensively by the dynamic scoring duo of sophomore Sofie Jorgensen (Oksbol, Denmark), and freshman Helen Weber (Marburg, Germany).

The two have combined to score 24 of the 39 goals the Lady Bulldogs have scored on the year, with Jorgensen ending the year netting 13 goals, and Weber scoring 11. Jorgensen's 13 goal total is tied for the highest in the AAC, and she has also scored three game-winners, as well.

In goal, Stephanie Burton (Queensland, Australia) has been a steady force in between the pipes for the Lady Bulldogs, making 87 saves, while recording a goals against average of 2.13. She's also notched two shutout wins on the year, as well.

Montreat is led on the offensive end by freshman forward Lauren Cantin, who has scored 13 goals on the season to tie Jorgensen for the conference lead in that category. In goal, Caroline Mellard has started 16 matches, making 85 saves while only allowing 17 goals for a goals against average of 1.46.

The match-up tomorrow afternoon is a rematch of the thrilling regular season tilt played on Oct. 15 in Barbourville, in which Union pulled out an exciting 2-1 win. Jorgensen scored the game-winner early in the second half, as the Lady Bulldogs hung on over the final 42 minutes of action to take the match.
