BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- The Union College men's soccer team will travel to Bryan to open the 2011 Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Bulldogs, who enter the tournament as the fifth seed, finished the regular season with a 10-6-2 overall record, 3-3-1 in the AAC, and is riding a five-match winning streak into the tournament. Bryan is 10-7-1 on the year, and also ended the regular year with a 3-3-1 record in the conference.
On offense for Union, the Bulldogs are led by senior Marc Miller
, and junior Chris Elliott
, who have both scored seven goals, apiece, on the season. Elliott, however, is the team's leading scorer after registering 10 assists on the season for a point total of 24.
In net, freshman Andrew Metcalf
has been impressive throughout his rookie campaign for the Bulldogs. In 17 matches played, Metcalf has made 106 saves (an AAC best), and recorded a goals against average of 1.30. Metcalf has also been named the AAC's Defensive Player of the Week twice during the season.
For Bryan, Pierce Kiembi leads the way on offense, scoring five goals and adding two assists on the year to lead the squad. In net, Joshua Oldroyd has been the Lions' primary keeper, making 40 saves, while allowing just eight goals in 10 matches played.
Earlier this season, Union and Bryan battled to a 2-2, double overtime draw at Bryan on Oct. 21. In the match, Union had a late 2-1 lead in the second half, only to see the match tied up on an own goal in the 85th minute. Metcalf was impressive for UC in the draw, making eight saves (four of which came in the overtime periods) on the night.
